Airmail marks emails from Google Sheets submissions as read automatically

I’m having trouble with my Airmail email client. I followed an online guide to create a contact form linked to Google Sheets and it works well. However, a strange issue occurs: when form submissions arrive, Airmail marks these emails as read without me opening them. This doesn’t happen with Gmail, where the emails remain marked as unread. I prefer to continue using Airmail, but I don’t want to change email clients because of this peculiarity. Has anyone faced a similar situation? Could there be something in how Google handles these emails that’s causing Airmail to treat them differently?

not really sure, but i think airmail can act weird with gmail servers. those auto emails might get treated differently. maybe check ur filters or labels first? also, having a special folder for the sheets emails could help keep things organized.

This happens when Airmail’s preview or background refresh features automatically access your emails. Google Sheets notifications have specific headers that trigger Airmail’s read status when it fetches email data in the background. I’ve seen this with automated emails from other services too. Go to Airmail preferences > Mail section and look for “Mark as read when previewed” or “Background app refresh” - turn those off. Also check if Airmail’s downloading full message bodies instead of just headers. Your Google account might have automation or forwarding rules that work differently with Airmail than they do with Gmail’s web interface.

It appears that this issue may stem from how Airmail interacts with your email server’s IMAP settings. Third-party email clients like Airmail can sometimes misinterpret server-side actions, such as filters or rules that you may have set up. I suggest reviewing your account settings to ensure there are no existing rules that might cause incoming Google Sheets notifications to be marked as read automatically. Additionally, take a closer look at your IMAP settings in Airmail—there might be configurations that can be adjusted to prevent emails from being marked as read prematurely. If it continues, consider temporarily disabling any filtering rules to isolate the problem.
