I’m interested in building a content creation workflow that uses RAG to pull sources and generate articles. But I’m worried about the citation part.
Most RAG content systems I’ve seen just generate text, and you lose track of where the information came from. If I want the output to include actual citations—like “according to [source],” with links or references—does that require building something custom?
I played around with a basic setup where the AI pulls documents and generates content, but adding citation tracking felt like it would require custom code to maintain a chain between what got retrieved and what ended up in the final text.
Has anyone built this with a visual workflow? Or is citation tracking the kind of thing that forces you into code?
Citation tracking is actually simpler than you think. The key is that your retrieval block needs to return both the content and metadata about the source.
When Latenode retrieves documents using built-in RAG, it includes source information. You just need to pass that metadata alongside the content to your generation step.
Then your generation prompt tells the model: “When you use information from these sources, cite them like this.” The model includes the citation in its output.
You don’t need custom code. You’re just being intentional about what data flows between blocks in your workflow.
I built a research article generator this way. The retrieval block pulls documents with their URLs. The generation block receives both the content and the URLs. The prompt tells it to cite sources inline.
Output includes proper citations without any custom logic. Just careful workflow design.
I did this for a blog content system. The retrieval part returns documents with metadata. I made sure the metadata included the source URL, publish date, and author.
Then in the generation step, I included a system prompt that said: use these sources and cite them. The AI model just naturally started including citations in the text.
The only custom part was formatting. I added a post-processing block that converted inline mentions into proper academic citations if needed. But that was optional.
Without that post-processing, citations were already there. The model understood the task.
Citation complexity depends on how strict your requirements are. If you just need source attribution in the text, that’s straightforward. If you need formal academic citations or structured reference lists, that adds another step.

The architecture is straightforward: retrieval preserves source metadata, generation receives it in the prompt, formatting handles output standards. Complexity is organizational, not technical.
