Can autonomous AI agents actually coordinate complex cross-department workflows without turning into a management nightmare?

We’re exploring whether to build autonomous AI agents to handle end-to-end business processes that currently require handoffs between three to four different teams. Right now, we have sales → operations → finance → customer success involved in deal-to-delivery workflows, and each handoff introduces delays and errors.

The appeal of autonomous AI teams is obvious: let multiple agents coordinate tasks without human intervention, no bottlenecks, faster turnaround. But I keep getting stuck on a practical question: how do you actually prevent chaos when multiple agents are operating independently on interconnected tasks?

I’ve read about agent coordination patterns, and the governance model seems critical. If agent A makes a decision that conflicts with what agent B needs, or if both agents are trying to update the same record simultaneously, what actually stops the workflow from becoming more broken than the manual process?

Also, what does licensing look like for this? If we’re running multiple autonomous agents on a single enterprise license, are there practical limits to how many agents we can spawn, or how many tasks they can execute in parallel?
