We tried empowering business users with a pure no-code tool three years ago, and you’re right to be skeptical. Out of twelve workflows we handed off to business users, three were actually maintained by those users after handoff. Nine came back to engineering within six months.

It’s extra work upfront, but it makes troubleshooting possible for non-engineers. The no-code builder itself isn’t the bottleneck. The real issue is workflow maintenance requires understanding system dependencies, error handling, and data transformations—things that don’t become obvious in a visual interface.
We’ve had better luck when business users author the requirements and engineers build the initial workflow, then the user walks through with the engineer to understand each component. Once they understand the structure, they can usually handle minor modifications. But any serious troubleshooting still comes back to engineering.
AI-generated workflows from text descriptions are interesting, but they add a layer of abstraction. If a user describes “send an email when this condition is met,” the AI might generate multiple ways to implement that. The user won’t necessarily understand why the AI chose one approach over another, which makes maintenance harder.
What helped us: treat AI-generated workflows as drafts that require human review and documentation. Don’t hand them directly to business users. Have engineering validate them, add error handling the AI probably missed, and most importantly, document the implementation decisions.
Sustainable workflow ownership by non-technical users depends on three things: clear error messages, built-in monitoring, and documentation at the business logic level rather than the technical level.
A good no-code platform shows users not just that a workflow failed, but why it failed and what to do about it. And it provides visibility into execution history so users can trace what happened.
With AI-generated workflows, you get an extra problem: the AI makes technical choices that business users won’t understand. A workflow that says “filter then aggregate then combine” is readable. If you go the AI-generation route, treat it as a starting point. Have engineering review what the AI generated, simplify it where possible, and add human-readable comments. Then users can own the workflow. But the initial AI generation isn’t the final product—it’s a draft.
No-code works if workflows stay simple. Once they get complex, even the person who built them struggles later. AI-generated workflows are worse—users don’t understand the implementation choices, so troubleshooting becomes impossible.
Business users can modify simple workflows. Complex ones require engineering. AI-generated workflows need engineering review before handoff or they become unfixable.
