Content-Specific App Suggestions in Google Drive

Google Drive App Recommendations Based on File Types

Hey everyone, I’ve been using Google Drive a lot lately and I was wondering about something. You know how we can choose different apps to open files with, right? Well, I was thinking it would be super helpful if Drive could show us only the apps that work with the file we’re trying to open.

For example, let’s say I’m trying to play an MP3 file. It would be awesome if the ‘Open With’ menu only showed me apps that can actually play music files. Right now, it just shows all the Drive apps, which can be a bit overwhelming.

Does anyone know if this feature exists already? Or if Google is planning to add something like this in the future? It seems like it would make things a lot easier for users. What do you all think about this idea? Would it be useful for you too?

I’ve actually been thinking about this exact issue recently! As someone who deals with a ton of different file types for both work and personal projects, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally opened a video file with a spreadsheet app or something equally useless.

One workaround I’ve found is to right-click the file and use the ‘Open with’ submenu instead of the main menu. It’s not perfect, but it does tend to show more relevant apps first. Still, your idea would be a massive improvement.

Have you considered submitting this as a feature request directly to Google? They have a feedback form for Drive, and I’ve heard they do actually look at those suggestions. Might be worth a shot. In the meantime, I guess we’ll just have to keep playing app roulette every time we open a file!

I’ve been using Google Drive extensively for work, and I completely agree that this feature would be incredibly useful. Currently, the ‘Open With’ menu can be quite cluttered, especially when you have numerous apps installed. While I haven’t come across any official announcements from Google about implementing this specific feature, it aligns well with their focus on user experience improvements.

In the meantime, I’ve found that organizing my files into type-specific folders (e.g., ‘Audio Files’, ‘Documents’, ‘Images’) helps streamline the process a bit. It’s not a perfect solution, but it does make file management more efficient. Additionally, setting default apps for specific file types can save time, though it doesn’t address the core issue you’ve raised.

This suggestion would certainly enhance Drive’s usability. Perhaps we could submit feedback to Google about this idea through their official channels. They often consider user suggestions for future updates.

totally agree, that’d be awesome! i’m always clicking through apps tryin to find the right one. google should def add this feature, it’d save so much time. maybe we could start a petition or somethin to get their attention? anyone else down for that idea?
