I’m currently running my .NET applications on SQL Server Express and I’m wondering about the cost differences when you need to handle massive amounts of data with complex queries and table joins.
What are the actual savings you can get with MySQL versus Microsoft SQL Server when your database grows really large? I’m talking about scenarios like a busy Q&A platform or a social media site that suddenly gets huge traffic spikes.
Right now I have no licensing costs since I use the free Express version, but I know that will change as my data grows. From what I’ve been reading online, it seems like MySQL users save quite a bit of money compared to SQL Server licensing. Is this really true in practice?
Has anyone here made the switch from SQL Server to MySQL specifically for cost reasons? What was your experience with performance and total cost of ownership?
