I am employed by a firm offering registered investment advisory services and I am curious if Airtable incorporates all the necessary functionalities to operate as a compliant CRM in our industry. Although custom CRM development within Airtable seems doable, I want to determine whether it adheres to the specific regulatory standards required in our sector.
Based on my experience working with Airtable, I believe that while it offers a lot of flexibility and customization, you’ll need to invest significant time in setting up the necessary controls to meet strict regulatory standards. I found that additional layers of security, including third-party integrations and audit tracking, were required to ensure proper compliance, especially in a highly regulated environment. It’s advisable to conduct thorough testing and engage with compliance experts to tailor your Airtable implementation to the specific needs of registered investment advisory services.
Having implemented Airtable in a similar setting, it is clear that the platform can be adapted for a compliant CRM environment if approached carefully. The flexibility allows customization to incorporate necessary controls, yet it requires significant development to address audit trails, secure data handling, and rigorous monitoring mechanisms. My experience showed that integrating additional security layers and adhering to detailed compliance protocols was essential. A comprehensive review of regulatory requirements combined with iterative testing can help ensure that implementation meets the standards expected in the investment advisory field.
Hey @CreatingStone,
Airtable is an easy-to-use low-code database, so in answer to your question if you can build a custom CRM with it. Working with teams, I have used Airtable to build their entire ERP, adding features like inventory tracking, purchases, sales and invoicing.
Before you invest time working on Airtable I would suggest considering the following:
- Number of users, since Airtable charges by user. If you have more than 8 users, you can build the database and automation on Airtable and then use Softr and Noloco to build the interfaces in a cost-effective way
- Data storage Airtable has some limitations on their packages about the number of rows you can add and file storage. So do an estimate of usage in 6 months and in a year from now
- CRM applications already have useful features for sale teams. Building your own CRM on Airtable means that if your team needs those features, you have to build them from scratch, and this has the hidden cost of working hours on building it. Not sure if this is wlwasy worthied. What I do is investigate sales team requirements, and the decision is made on a case-by-case basis.

I am doing co-building sessions where we build your Airtable base, interfaces, and any automation you need during the live session. This helps you get the solution done during the conversation while you learn how to make progress by yourself.
Happy to schedule a 30-min conversation with no commitment to share my suggestions on your project. Here is my calendar link: Solve it in 30 mins | Dimitris Goudis | Cal.com
