Has anyone else received the recent notification from GIPHY about their API pricing updates? I got an email titled something like ‘important company updates that will directly impact your integration’ and it basically says their API won’t be free anymore.
They quoted me $9000 which is way too expensive for my small project. When I said no, they offered to negotiate but even $900 would still be too much for how little I actually use their service.
From what I understand, Shutterstock bought GIPHY and now they’re pulling a move similar to what Reddit did with their API pricing. I don’t mind paying something reasonable since their service works well, but this feels like they’re trying to push out small developers and indie projects.
The email didn’t give any clear deadline either, just some vague language at the end.
Just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case you’re thinking about using GIPHY or already have it integrated in your projects.
