I recently inherited a JIRA project that was created by a previous team lead. When I look at the project settings, I can see that all the current assignees belong to a different department. I need to figure out how to include my own team members so they can be assigned to tickets and have proper access to the project.
I’m pretty new to JIRA administration, so I’m not sure where to start. Should I be looking in project permissions, user groups, or somewhere else? Any guidance would be really appreciated since I want to get this sorted out quickly for my team.
hey, just head to the project settings and check out the people tab. u can add your team members there directly. permissions can be a hassle, so unless u need strict control, don’t worry too much about it. just make sure they’ve got their jira accounts set up!
When I took over a project, I started with the Project Roles section - you’ll find it under Project Settings, then ‘Users and roles’ (might be named slightly different depending on your JIRA version). Here’s the thing: JIRA works on roles, not individual permissions. Users get assigned to roles like ‘Developers’ or ‘Users’ within each project. I added my team members to the right roles instead of messing with permission schemes. Check if your company uses custom roles too - some organizations create department-specific ones that aren’t obvious. Once people are in the right roles, they’ll automatically get permissions to view, edit, and get assigned tickets based on what those roles allow.
Start by checking the project’s permission scheme rather than individual user settings. Navigate to project settings and look for the ‘Permissions’ section, where you can control access. Ensure your team members are part of user groups with existing permissions or modify the permission scheme accordingly. When I faced a similar situation, I created a new user group for my team in the JIRA admin console and assigned that group to roles like ‘Assignable User’ and ‘Browse Projects.’ Always verify that you have project admin rights, or you’ll need to coordinate with your JIRA administrator for assistance.
