How to identify which Gmail address received a mailing list message?

I’ve got several email addresses connected to my Gmail account and I’m part of various mailing lists. When I get emails from these groups, they show something like:

To: [email protected]

The problem is I can’t remember which of my email addresses I used when I joined this particular mailing list. Is there a way in Gmail to see exactly which address the message was actually sent to? I need to figure this out so I can manage my subscriptions better and know which address is associated with which groups.

hit ctrl+shift+o (or cmd+shift+o on mac) to check the email headers. it’s def quicker than fumbling around menus. the delivered-to line will tell you exactly which gmail address received that email.

Check the ‘To’ field more carefully in Gmail. Sometimes it shows abbreviated info, but hover over or click the recipient field - you might see more details. Also worth checking your Gmail forwarding and POP/IMAP settings for clues about which addresses are actually active. I had the same problem with work subscriptions and started keeping a simple text file tracking which email I used for what. Sounds boring but it saves tons of confusion when you need to unsubscribe or change settings later.

Open the email in Gmail and click the three-dot menu, then hit ‘Show original.’ Look for the ‘Delivered-To:’ field in the headers - that’s your Gmail address that got the message. You might also check ‘X-Original-To:’ or ‘Envelope-to:’ fields for more info. Works great when you’re juggling multiple accounts.
