Is there a reliable method to ensure images appear automatically when people open my emails in Gmail? Are there any specific image formats, hosting solutions, or email configuration tricks that work better than others?

I’ve dealt with this for three years running campaigns. What actually worked: switch to Mailchimp or ConvertKit instead of regular email clients. Gmail treats established ESPs way better than individual senders. Also tried adding a quick text snippet asking people to enable images and explaining why - that helped too. Warm up your domain slowly - start with smaller batches to your most engaged subscribers, then scale up. Keep a good text-to-image ratio. Don’t go image-heavy. Gmail cares more about engagement than anything else, so focus on getting replies and interactions instead of just forcing image display.
Gmail blocks images for security reasons - there’s no real way around it. Your best bet is building sender reputation. Make sure you’ve got SPF, DKIM, and DMARC set up properly for your domain. I’ve seen that sending consistently from the same IP and domain helps Gmail trust you over time. Also, get people to add your email to their contacts when they sign up - this makes a huge difference for image display. Don’t try to hack around Gmail’s security.
