I’ve been wondering about this for a while now. When I go to my GitHub profile page while signed in, I can only see the Public Activity section. I know that private repos and contributions are hidden from other users for obvious reasons, but I’m curious if there’s a method to view my own private activity when I’m logged into my account.
I’ve looked around the settings and profile pages but can’t seem to find any option to display my private contributions or activity. Does GitHub provide any feature that allows users to see their own private work history? It would be helpful to get a complete picture of all my contributions, both public and private ones.
Actually, GitHub does track your private contributions in your profile’s contribution graph, but you need to enable the visibility setting first. Go to your profile settings and look for the option “Include private contributions in my profile” - this will show private activity as green squares without revealing specific repository details. The caveat is that while this displays the activity levels, you still cannot see the actual commit messages or repository names from private repos in your public activity feed. Your contribution calendar will reflect the complete picture of your coding activity, but the detailed breakdown remains protected. This feature strikes a balance between giving you credit for all your work while maintaining privacy for sensitive projects.
GitHub provides a way for you to see your private contributions, although it may not be as straightforward as you would hope. When you look at your contribution graph on your profile, private contributions do factor into the total counts for each day. However, the specifics of those contributions, such as repository names or exact commit details, are not displayed. This means you might notice higher activity on certain days compared to what’s shown publicly. Additionally, you have the option to configure your profile settings to make these private activities visible as general activity, while still keeping sensitive repository information hidden for security purposes. As long as you’re logged in, the activity timeline on your profile will encompass all your contributions, even if the details are kept private.
