Migrating workflows from camunda to open-source—how much rebuilding actually happens after ai copilot generates them?

We’re evaluating a migration from Camunda, and one thing that keeps coming up is AI Copilot Workflow Generation. The pitch is that you describe what you want, and it spits out ready-to-run workflows. That sounds great in theory, but I’m skeptical about how much we’d actually have to rebuild after the AI generates the first version.

Our processes aren’t simple happy paths. We’ve got branching logic, error handling, compliance checks, data transformations. If AI Copilot can handle 80% of that from a text description, great—but if we’re going to spend the next month rebuilding and fixing everything it generated, then it’s not really saving us time.

Has anyone actually used this? When you describe a Camunda workflow in plain language and the copilot generates it, how much of it actually survives to production without major rework? Are there certain types of workflows where it works better than others?

We tested this on about a dozen workflows before committing to our migration. The results were mixed, but useful.

Simple workflows—data extraction, basic transformations, sending notifications—probably 70-80% of what it generated worked without changes. We had to tweak some field mappings and add a few error handlers, but the structure was solid.

Consider the validation and compliance angle carefully. If your workflows handle sensitive data or have regulatory requirements, you’ll need to verify that the AI-generated workflows implement those correctly. This typically requires more manual review than straightforward data transformation workflows. Plan your migration timeline accordingly—compliance validation can extend the timeline significantly, sometimes negating the time savings from AI generation. That’s worth factoring into your business case before you commit.

Simple workflows: 70-80% reusable. Complex ones: 40-50%. The more detail you give the copilot upfront, the better it works. Still needs testing though.
