what helped was automating a consistent test: same page load, same interaction pattern, recorded across your target devices. measure paint time, measure TTI, measure scroll performance. run it regularly. when one of those three regresses, you have a data point to debug against.
the resource loading optimization comes after you know which metrics are actually slow. measure first, optimize second. too many people guess at what to optimize.
webkit performance monitoring requires distinguishing between infrastructure metrics and user-observable metrics. render time is observable. aggregate CPU usage is not. first contentful paint is observable. total bytes downloaded is infrastructure data.
tools for this typically automate three parts: consistent test execution across target devices, metric collection from each execution, and trend analysis to detect regressions. templates accelerate setup because they already separate signal from noise.
the variability you’re seeing across devices is expected—different hardware renders at different speeds. what matters is detecting changes within your target device cohort. if render time on iPhone 12 degrades from 800ms to 1200ms, that’s a signal. if absolute render time differs between iPhone 12 and iPhone 14, that’s expected.
