Plugin for enhanced text formatting in JIRA issue descriptions and comments

I’m looking for a way to add better text formatting options to JIRA issue descriptions and comment sections. Right now the basic editor feels pretty limited when I need to format text properly.

Is there any available plugin or add-on that can provide advanced text editing capabilities similar to what Confluence offers? I need something that allows for better formatting like bold text, bullet points, tables, and other rich text features.

I’ve been searching through the Atlassian marketplace but haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for. Has anyone successfully implemented enhanced text editing in their JIRA instance? What solutions have worked best for improving the description field editing experience?

the default jira editor sucks for formatting. we switched to TinyMCE Editor addon and it’s way better for text styling. not as good as confluence but miles ahead of stock jira. install was a pain though - ran into compatibility issues with our version but support fixed it.

The Rich Text Editor Plugin by Ricksoft is exactly what you need. I installed it six months ago after hitting the same frustrating limitations. It transforms that basic text editor into something way closer to Confluence’s capabilities - proper WYSIWYG editing, tables, advanced formatting, and you can embed images right in descriptions and comments. Installation’s pretty straightforward through the marketplace, but you’ll need admin access. Licensing was reasonable for our team size. Heads up though - it changes how existing formatted text looks, so expect some user adjustment time. The productivity boost in our documentation quality made it totally worth it.

Have you tried upgrading to JIRA Cloud? If you’re still on Server, the newer versions have way better editors than the old ones. I switched last year and the text editor got so much more robust - better formatting options, wiki markup that actually works reliably. If you can’t upgrade, check if your current version supports the newer editor interface. Sometimes it’s there but not turned on by default. That’s what happened with ours - we had to enable it through system admin settings. Once we flipped it on, the formatting capabilities were night and day better.
