Web-based document editor plugin for Joomla similar to Google Docs

I need to implement a document editing solution on my Joomla website where users can directly modify various file types including Word documents, PDFs, and spreadsheets without downloading them first.

The main requirements are:

  • Edit documents directly in the browser
  • Support for multiple file formats (text, PDF, Excel)
  • Save changes back to the server automatically
  • Integration with Joomla CMS

I’m basically looking for something that works like Google Docs but can be embedded into my Joomla site. Users should be able to click on a file and start editing it right away in their browser.

Are there any APIs or plugins available that can handle this kind of functionality? I’ve searched around but haven’t found anything specifically designed for Joomla that supports all these file types.

I set up document editing on my Joomla site with OnlyOffice Document Server last year. It’s not a dedicated Joomla plugin, but the API integrates smoothly. You’ll need some technical skills since the document server installs separately. It handles Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files really well - intuitive editing plus auto-saves to the server. For PDFs, you’ll need something else like PDF.js for basic viewing and annotations since OnlyOffice doesn’t do PDF editing. Took me about a week to get everything working, mostly figuring out user permissions and file handling. But it’s been rock solid since then. If your host supports Docker containers, the OnlyOffice install is way easier.

I went with a hybrid setup - Microsoft Office Online through their API plus PDFtron WebViewer for PDFs. You need an Office 365 business subscription, but Word and Excel files open right in the browser with full formatting. PDFtron handles PDF annotations and forms pretty well. The trickiest part was connecting Joomla user sessions to Office Online auth, but once I figured that out, auto-save works great. Users can collaborate in real-time too. It’s about $6/user/month, but if you’ve got the budget, it’s solid for professional document editing.

check out collabora online too. we integrated it with our joomla site 6 months ago and it handles most office docs pretty well. setup was a pain but it’s been rock solid since. pdf editing’s still basic though - just annotations and form filling.
