I’ve been watching the demos of AI Copilot workflow generation, and the pitch is pretty compelling: describe what you want to automate in plain language, and the system generates a ready-to-run workflow. No dragging nodes around. No syntax errors. No “wait, did I configure that integration correctly?”
The problem is that I’m skeptical of claims about time savings. Most tools that promise to save time actually just move the work downstream. You save time on the initial build but lose it debugging edge cases, or you end up rewriting half the generated workflow anyway.
What I’m actually trying to understand is real time savings at different stages.
First, the initial generation phase: how much faster is it to describe an automation in text versus clicking through a visual builder? I get that if I’m a non-technical person, plain text might feel more natural. But if I already know how to use Make’s UI, am I actually saving time, or is there a learning curve tax on the plain text approach?
Second, the validation and testing phase: when you generate a workflow from text, how much time do you spend validating that it actually does what you asked? My gut tells me this is where the time savings claims break down. Generated workflows probably handle the happy path fine, but real workflows have edge cases.
Third, the ongoing maintenance phase: if someone else on my team needs to modify the workflow six months later, is a generated workflow easier to understand than one built manually? Or does it become a black box that nobody trusts?
I’m not asking for marketing claims here. I want to know: in practice, at each stage, where are the actual time gains and where do you end up flushing time away?
