When you're coordinating multiple autonomous AI agents across workflows, where does governance actually break down?

We’re exploring the idea of deploying autonomous AI agents to handle end-to-end processes in our n8n environment. The concept sounds great—multiple specialized agents working together, reducing manual handoffs, lowering staffing overhead.

But I’m wondering about the practical governance side. When you have multiple AI agents making decisions and executing tasks simultaneously, how do you actually maintain control? How do you audit what decisions were made and why? How do you prevent one agent from making a choice that cascades into problems downstream?

I find it easy to understand governance with traditional workflows—you have defined steps, human approval gates, clear logs of what happened. But with autonomous agents, the decision-making is distributed. Some decisions might be stochastic, non-deterministic, hard to reproduce.

We’ve also got regulatory requirements around explainability. We need to be able to explain why certain actions were taken, especially around customer-facing processes. Can you actually maintain that kind of audit trail with autonomous agents, or does the distribution of decision-making make it too opaque?

Has anyone here deployed autonomous agents in a controlled enterprise environment? Where did governance actually become a problem? What did you have to build to stay compliant?

Governance breaks down faster than you’d think, but not for the reasons you might expect. The first issue is determinism. When you have distributed agents making decisions, you lose the ability to replay decisions. A workflow step either executes or it doesn’t, but an agent might make slightly different choices each time depending on input variations or model temperature settings.

We built explicit decision logging early on. Every agent decision gets logged with its reasoning, the data it used, the alternative paths it rejected. That creates an audit trail. But maintaining that adds overhead to every agent action.

The bigger issue? Agent communication. When Agent A makes a decision based on assumptions about what Agent B will do, but Agent B decides differently in response, you get cascade failures. We had a situation where our customer outreach agent made promises based on what it thought inventory could support, but inventory made different decisions. That was chaos.

We solved it by centralizing critical decisions through a coordinator agent that approves major agent-to-agent handoffs. Still autonomous, but with guardrails.

From a compliance angle, explainability is genuinely hard. We’re heavily regulated, so we built a “decision justification” system where agents have to output their reasoning alongside every action. It’s not foolproof—AI reasoning is still somewhat opaque—but it’s audit-trail compliant.
