Which Jira fields do you consider essential for your workflow?

Hi there! I’m working on improving my team’s Jira configuration and would love to get some input from the community about which fields you rely on most heavily in your daily work.

I’m particularly interested in knowing which standard fields like Priority, Reporter, or Due Date you find absolutely critical, as well as any custom fields your organization has created that have become game-changers for your processes.

It would be great to also know what type of work environment you’re in (software development, marketing, operations, etc.) since that probably influences which fields matter most.

Any insights about unique or unusual fields that work really well for your specific use case would be awesome too!

Story Points are a game-changer for sprint planning and estimating workload. We also added a custom Risk Level field that catches potential blockers early - saves tons of scrambling down the road. Don’t sleep on Labels either - we use them for cross-team coordination and reporting gets way cleaner. Just nail down your field naming convention upfront, or you’ll end up with duplicate fields and confusion that nobody bothers fixing.

Our dev team swears by Severity and Business Value fields. Severity helps us prioritize based on user impact, and Business Value keeps tasks aligned with strategic goals. We also added a custom Feedback Loop field that grabs user input on features we’re building - it’s been huge for our iteration cycle. Just don’t go overboard with custom fields or you’ll create a mess. Keep it clean and relevant.

the epic link field is seriously underrated. makes tracking big initiatives way easier when everything’s connected right. we’re in marketing ops and use a custom “campaign type” field that auto-sets workflow rules. saves us tons of manual work.
