Will bases API functionality serve as an alternative to Airtable?

I’ve been reading through the bases development plans and noticed they’re planning to add API functionality. This made me start thinking about whether this new feature could work as a substitute for database tools like Airtable, Nocodb, and similar platforms when it comes to building automated workflows.

I’m particularly curious about how robust the API might be compared to what these other tools offer. Has anyone else been following this development? Do you think the bases API will have enough features to handle the kind of automation tasks that people typically use Airtable for?

I’m wondering if it would be worth waiting for this feature instead of setting up integrations with existing database services.

I’ve watched similar platform launches before - the first API versions are always pretty bare-bones. Airtable’s had years to build out field validation, complex queries, webhooks, all that good stuff. Bases will probably handle basic CRUD fine at launch, but don’t expect the advanced automation features that make Zapier + Airtable so powerful. Can you wait months (maybe longer) for them to catch up? That’s the real question. I’d look at what you actually need right now and when you need it. If it’s production-critical and soon, stick with what works. You can always switch later if bases delivers.

yeah, i agree, bases api probably won’t be as good at launch. airtable has more features and a proven track record. if you’re into automation, I’d stick with it for now, then see how bases evolves later on.
