Accessing device storage files in Google Docs on Android

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to open files that are saved on my Android phone’s internal storage using the Google Docs app. I know I can access files from Google Drive easily, but I’m not sure how to browse and open files that are stored locally on my device.

Has anyone successfully done this before? Is there a specific setting or feature in Google Docs that allows access to the phone’s storage? Or do I need to move my files to a different location first?

Any tips or step-by-step instructions would be really helpful. Thanks in advance for your assistance!

I’ve been in your shoes before, and I found a solution that works pretty well. Instead of trying to access files directly through Google Docs, use your Android’s built-in Files app. Navigate to the document you want to open, tap and hold it, then select ‘Open with’ from the menu. Choose Google Docs from the list of apps.

This method essentially ‘sends’ the file to Google Docs without actually moving it. It’s not as streamlined as accessing Drive files, but it gets the job done. Just remember that any changes you make will be saved to a new copy in your Google Drive, not to the original file on your device.

Also, keep in mind that this works best with common file types like .docx or .txt. If you’re dealing with more obscure formats, you might need to convert them first.

I’ve encountered this issue before, and unfortunately, Google Docs doesn’t natively support accessing files directly from your Android device’s internal storage. It’s designed primarily to work with cloud-based files in Google Drive. However, there’s a workaround you can try. First, use your phone’s file manager app to locate the document you want to open. Then, share the file to Google Drive. Once it’s in Drive, you can easily open and edit it in Google Docs.

Alternatively, consider using a third-party document editor that has better integration with local storage. Some options like Microsoft Office or WPS Office allow direct access to device files. While not ideal if you’re committed to Google Docs, it might be a practical solution for your needs.

hey, actually u can use the Files app on android to access local storage. open Files, find ur document, tap it and choose ‘Open with’ then pick Google Docs. it should work for most file types docs supports. hope that helps!
