I’m having trouble figuring out how to change the privacy settings for my files in Google Drive. Right now, a lot of my documents are set to ‘anyone with the link can view’. I want to make them private so only I can see them.
I know how to remove specific people who have access, but that’s not what I’m trying to do. I just want to change the overall visibility setting for these files.
Has anyone done this before? Is there an easy way to do it for multiple files at once? Or do I have to go through each file individually?
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I have faced similar challenges with managing file privacy in Google Drive. In my experience, the best approach is to log in to drive.google.com and select all the files you wish to update. Instead of adjusting each file individually, you can right-click on the selection to open the sharing settings, then modify the visibility option by changing it from ‘Anyone with the link’ to a restricted setting. This change makes the files private to your account only. Note that modifying folder permissions will apply to all files contained within the folder.
As someone who’s dealt with this issue extensively, I can tell you it’s a common concern. Here’s what I’ve found works best:
Log into your Google Drive and use the search function to find all files with ‘anyone with the link’ sharing. Type ‘to:anyone’ in the search bar. This will show all your publicly shared files.
From there, you can select multiple files at once by holding Ctrl (or Cmd on Mac) and clicking each file. Then right-click, choose ‘Share’, and change the setting to ‘Restricted’.
This method saved me hours of work when I needed to secure hundreds of files quickly. Just be careful not to change permissions on files that genuinely need to be shared. Always double-check important documents after making bulk changes.
hey ethan, been there before! go to drive.google.com, select the files u wanna change. right-click, hit ‘Share’, then click the dropdown next to ‘Anyone with the link’. choose ‘Restricted’ to make em private. way faster than doin each file separately. hope this helps!
