I’m in a bit of a pickle with a big Jira Service Management project. We’re trying to smush three separate JSM projects into one big happy family. I’ve already done the grunt work in our sandbox:
Moved all the old tickets over
Cooked up some fancy new workflows
Set up a bunch of cool automations
Currently putting it through its paces with our users
But now comes the scary part: getting all this goodness into our live environment. Here’s what’s keeping me up at night:
Our production project is already a beast (39+ agents, 7000+ tickets)
I’m basically replacing everything - workflows, request types, forms, you name it
Really hoping for a ‘get out of jail free’ card if things go south
I tried asking our Jira rep for help, but they weren’t much use. They just mumbled something about backups not covering all the important bits and waved vaguely at some plugins.
So I’m turning to you fine folks. Any tips on:
Moving all this stuff from sandbox to production without breaking everything?
Good plugins that actually do what they say on the tin?
Ways to hit the ‘undo’ button if it all goes pear-shaped?
Would love to hear your success stories (or horror stories to avoid). Thanks a bunch!
As someone who’s been through the JSM consolidation gauntlet, I feel your pain. One approach that worked wonders for me was creating a staging environment that mirrored production. This way, you can do a trial run of the migration without risking your live data.
For the actual migration, I’d strongly recommend doing it in off-hours when user activity is low. Make sure you’ve got a solid rollback plan in place - document every step meticulously.
In terms of plugins, ‘Project Configurator for Jira’ was a lifesaver for me. It allowed for granular control over what gets migrated and helped catch potential conflicts before they became issues.
Remember, no matter how well you plan, there will likely be some hiccups. Have a dedicated team ready to troubleshoot issues as they arise during and immediately after the migration. And don’t forget to over-communicate with your users - set expectations early and provide clear guidance on any changes they might encounter.
hey, been thru similar migrations. i advice stage migration: start small and test thoroughly before moving bigger. backups are key: take snapshots. try ‘project configurator’ as a plugin. good luck, and chill!
I’ve tackled similar consolidations before, and it’s definitely a complex undertaking. My recommendation would be to approach this methodically. Start by creating a detailed migration plan that outlines each step and anticipates potential risks.
Consider using a tool like Configuration Manager for Jira, which can help compare and migrate project configurations effectively.
For the actual migration, consider executing it in phases. Begin with non-critical elements and gradually progress to more crucial components. This phased approach helps identify issues early, allowing you to address them before full deployment. Ensure you also have a comprehensive rollback plan in place, as full backups might not cover every nuance.
Maintaining clear communication with your team and stakeholders throughout the migration is essential. Set realistic expectations and prepare for some disruptions during the process. With careful planning and methodical execution, consolidating your projects can be accomplished successfully.
