Anyone actually making money selling automation templates on a marketplace, or is it more theoretical?

I’ve been building custom workflows and automations for a few internal teams and starting to think about whether these could be packaged as templates and sold. I’ve seen platforms that let you monetize what you build on their marketplace.

But I’m curious whether that’s actually a viable income stream or if it’s mostly aspirational. Like, is anyone actually making meaningful money selling templates, or does the market not really exist yet?

I’m not thinking “replace my day job with template sales.” I’m thinking more about whether it’s worth the effort to polish something I’ve already built, document it, and list it for sale. Or whether I’d spend weeks preparing something and sell three copies total.

I’m also wondering about the mechanics: do platforms handle payment and dispute resolution, or do you own that? What percentage cut do they take? How much documentation and support do you actually need to provide?

If anyone’s done this successfully, I’d like to hear what the effort was actually like and whether the revenue justified it.

We sold a few templates. Revenue was minimal but consistent. Most buyers want significant customization support, which eats margins. Document everything or expect support tickets.

The platform handles payments and disputes, which is valuable. They typically take 30 percent. The real work isn’t building the template—it’s making it generic enough that someone else can use it without rebuilding half of it. We spent more time on documentation and handling customization requests than on developing new templates. If the template solves a specific, documented problem, sales happen. If it’s niche or too customized to your workflow, it sits.

Start small. Sell what you’ve already built. Gauge interest before investing effort into polishing.

Made decent income from three templates focused on crm integrations. Took time learning the marketplace rules, but worth it if u already have material ready.
