Anyone else stuck managing a dozen AI API keys for their node.js projects?

Serious question - I’m burning hours every week juggling OpenAI, Claude, and other AI service subscriptions. My node.js project needs multi-model flexibility, but maintaining all these separate API keys and billing accounts is killing my velocity. Tried writing a wrapper class but updates break constantly. How are others handling this complexity without losing custom JS control? Any solutions that don’t require becoming a full-time key janitor?

I built a config management layer with encrypted storage before. Still had to handle quota monitoring and error fallbacks. Not worth it unless you have dedicated DevOps. Might be easier to consolidate through an abstraction service.

Three strategies I’ve seen work:

  1. API gateway pattern with rate limiting
  2. Vendor-agnostic SDKs (though they still require key management)
  3. Proxy service that handles authentication
    Each has tradeoffs. For node.js specifically, environment variables + secret manager helps but doesn’t solve billing fragmentation.

Consider whether you actually need multiple models live. Many projects overcomplicate by using 5 models where 2 would suffice with proper prompt engineering. Consolidated billing through a unified platform could help, but verify latency and compliance implications first. Custom code hooks remain essential for edge cases.

Central auth service + retry logic. Use pnpm workspaces for key rotations.
