Best automation platform for Shopify order fulfillment workflows?

Looking for advice on choosing the right automation tool for our e-commerce setup. We sell online courses through Shopify and need to automatically send calendar invitations when customers purchase. The built-in email system doesn’t support file attachments, so we need an external workflow solution.

We already have Calendar Events Builder for creating the actual calendar files. Now I’m comparing different automation platforms:

  • Zapier: User-friendly with ready-made integrations, but pricing could get expensive with higher volume
  • Make.com / Pipedream: Better pricing structure for medium usage
  • n8n: Open-source option with self-hosting benefits, though requires more technical setup

Has anyone implemented similar post-purchase automation? Which platform worked best for your use case and what factors influenced your decision?

We did the same evaluation last year for our digital store. Ended up with Make.com after testing all three. The deciding factor? Functionality vs cost at scale. Zapier worked great during trials, but once we hit 2,000 orders monthly, pricing got crazy. Make.com handled the same volume for about 40% less. Learning curve was steeper than Zapier but not by much. Here’s what caught us off guard: error handling. Make.com gives you way more control over failed runs, which saved our asses when calendar file generation kept breaking. We had to manually fix stuff way less compared to Zapier. For calendar attachments specifically, Make.com’s file handling is solid. HTTP modules play nice with external APIs too if you need to connect with Calendar Events Builder.

Had this exact problem. Tried Zapier, then Make, but found something better.

Most platforms charge per operation, which kills you when processing files + sending emails + updating records. That’s 3+ operations per order.

Switched to Latenode after scaling costs got crazy. Same Shopify webhook setup, but you pay for actual compute time, not random operation counts. Huge difference for file attachments and calendar invites.

Their HTTP requests module works great with Calendar Events Builder. Built retry logic that doesn’t burn credits on failures. Shopify integration grabs all order data in one shot.

No monthly minimums either. Test everything free, scale when ready. Visual editor’s familiar if you’ve used Make or Zapier, but pricing makes way more sense for file workflows.

Been running n8n for 18 months on similar stuff. Self-hosting isn’t scary if you know basic server management. What hooked me was unlimited executions - no monthly fees killing your margins. Setup took longer than plug-and-play options, but you can customize everything. Error responses, retry logic, whatever you need. Shopify integration works great - their webhook node never gave me trouble with file attachments or API calls. Community workflows saved me tons of time too. Downside? You handle maintenance and updates yourself, but it’s manageable with decent monitoring.

make.com has been my go-to for this! way more affordable than zapier, especially once you scale. it took me a couple days to get the shopify webhook sorted, but now it’s super smooth. their templates really helped cut down on time!
