I’m managing a game development team and we rely on Jira for our project tracking. However, when it comes to scenario planning like “What happens if we remove Feature Y?” or “How does the timeline change if we add more resources?”, I find myself constantly switching to Excel, which becomes really messy and hard to maintain.
I’m looking for better approaches or native Jira features that can help with modeling different project scenarios and alternatives. Has anyone found effective ways to do this kind of planning directly within Jira or with lightweight tools that integrate well with it?
Would really appreciate any suggestions or workflows that have worked for similar project planning needs.
i totally get that! roadmaps in jira can be a life saver. just set up epics for each scenario and check em out on the timeline view to see all at once. so much easier than switching between apps.
Advanced Roadmaps (formerly Portfolio for Jira) works great for this. You can create multiple plan versions in the same project and switch between them to compare approaches. The capacity planning lets you mess with resource allocation and see timeline changes instantly without losing your original baseline. I love it for game dev because you can toggle entire feature sets on/off and watch how dependencies ripple through your timeline. Way more visual than spreadsheets, and it stays connected to your actual Jira data. Heads up though - you need Premium or Enterprise tier, but it’s been worth every penny for our planning accuracy.
Custom fields and JQL filters can be effective for scenario planning in Jira. I established scenario-specific labels and custom fields to categorize stories according to different approaches. By creating saved filters, I am able to quickly assess the scope and effort needed for each scenario. A particularly useful feature is bulk editing, which enables me to move stories between scenarios and see updated burndown charts instantly. When stakeholders request changes, I can filter the backlog swiftly instead of reverting to spreadsheets. While it takes time to set up a proper tagging system, it ultimately provides real-time scenario comparisons that align with the development progress.
