Best methods to boost average order value in your Shopify store?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been running my Shopify store for a while now and I’m looking for proven ways to get customers to spend more per purchase. My current average order value feels pretty low and I want to change that.

I’ve been thinking about trying a few different approaches:

  • Creating product packages where customers can save money buying multiple items together
  • Offering discounts when people buy more quantity
  • Adding suggestions for related products on checkout pages
  • Maybe some buy one get one deals

What has actually worked for you guys? I’d really appreciate hearing about any specific strategies or tools you’ve used that made a real difference. Even if something didn’t work out, I’d love to know about it so I can avoid the same mistakes.

Thanks for any advice you can share!

cart page product recs rly helped me! i use apps that show ‘frequently bought together’ based on real data, not random junk. personalization is key! when u show stuff that matches what they already viewed, conversions skyrocket compared to generic suggestions.

Cross-selling at checkout works best for me. I throw up a simple popup right before payment with complementary items at 15% off. Timing’s everything - they’re already buying, so they’re way more likely to grab extras. What surprised me was how much product placement matters. Generic suggestions did nothing, but when I matched stuff that actually goes together (leather conditioner with leather goods), conversions shot up. Small add-ons crush it compared to expensive upsells. People grab a $12 accessory all day but won’t touch another $80 product. Makes sense - small additions feel reasonable when you’re already spending. Took three months to dial it in, but my average order value jumped 40% once I nailed the right combos and timing.

Bundle automation is where you really see results. I set up workflows that create dynamic product bundles based on what customers are actually buying.

Skip manually creating fixed bundles. Instead, automatically suggest complementary products when someone adds an item to cart. Phone case goes in? Instantly offer screen protectors and chargers at a small discount.

The real magic happens when you automate the whole upsell sequence. Customer buys product A, system immediately triggers personalized recommendations for products B and C based on their purchase history and browsing behavior.

I also automate quantity discounts that adjust in real time. Customer adds 2 items, price drops 10%. Add 3 items, drops 15%. All happens automatically without you touching anything.

Most people try doing this manually but it takes forever and you miss opportunities. Automation catches every customer at the perfect moment.

Latenode handles these workflows seamlessly and connects directly with Shopify. You can set up the whole system in about an hour and it runs itself after that.

Volume pricing works best for me. Skip flat discounts - just make the per-unit price drop when people buy more. Like one item for $25, but three for $65 total. Now buying more feels like saving money instead of spending more. People focus on the per-item savings, not their bigger total. I show all the pricing tiers right on the product page so they see exactly what they’ll save. The key was testing different structures. My first try had too many tiers and confused everyone. Now I use just 2-3 clear breakpoints. Best approach is making your highest value tier hit the AOV you want. Took me six weeks of testing different prices and quantities to nail it for my products and customers.

yup, free shipping is a game changer! when you set a limit like ‘free ship on $75+’, it really pushes peeps to add more stuff to their carts. i’ve noticed an up to 30% jump in AOV since i tried it. def a win!
