I keep seeing claims about autonomous AI agents and teams orchestrating complex workflows, and I’m honestly skeptical. On paper it sounds great—have some AI agents handle data mapping, another run integration tests, another coordinates between departments. But in practice?
We’re planning a BPM migration across three departments with pretty different workflows. Finance has their invoice processes, ops has their vendor management flows, and customer success has their ticket routing. These don’t live in isolation—they touch each other constantly.

For a three-department migration with interdependencies, I’d model it as: agents handle all execution tasks, but orchestration follows a pre-defined sequence with human checkpoints at critical hand-offs.
The honest answer is that AI agents excel at specific, well-defined tasks, but cross-department coordination has too many variables for full autonomy to work reliably in most cases.

The autonomous AI teams still did most of the actual work—no-code builders reduced the development overhead significantly. But orchestration of the overall migration remained controlled, with escalation paths defined where needed.
You don’t need to choose between full autonomy and full manual control. The sweet spot is AI handling execution at scale while orchestration remains human-directed but highly visible.
