Hey everyone! I’m new to screenwriting and I’ve been working on a script using Google Docs. It’s the only tool I’m really familiar with besides Final Draft and Trelby. I gave Trelby a shot but it just didn’t click with me.
I’m wondering if Google Docs is an acceptable platform for writing scripts. Does anyone have experience using it for this purpose?
Also, I’m considering entering a screenwriting competition. As a beginner, do you think it’s a good idea? I’m not sure if I’m ready or if it’s too soon. Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help. I’m excited to learn more about the craft and hopefully improve my skills.
I’ve been using Google Docs for screenwriting for a while now, and it’s actually not too bad. The key is to set up proper formatting from the start. I created a template with all the necessary styles (scene headings, action, dialogue, etc.) which saves a ton of time.
That said, it does have limitations. Automatic scene numbering and revision tracking aren’t built-in, which can be a pain as your script develops. I’ve found some add-ons that help, but they’re not perfect.
As for competitions, I say go for it. I entered my first script in a contest when I was just starting out. Didn’t win, but the feedback was invaluable. It pushed me to improve and gave me a sense of where I stood. Just make sure to read the rules carefully and format your script according to industry standards. Good luck!
While Google Docs can work for screenwriting, it’s not ideal for professional-level work. I’ve found it lacks crucial features like automatic pagination and industry-standard formatting. These might seem minor, but they become significant hurdles as your script grows.
I’d recommend looking into dedicated screenwriting software. WriterDuet is a solid online option with a free tier. It offers proper formatting, collaboration tools, and cloud storage. Highland 2 is another excellent choice if you’re on a Mac.
Regarding competitions, entering can be beneficial for motivation and deadlines. However, ensure your script is polished before submission. Consider joining a writers’ group for feedback first. This can help you refine your work and build confidence before putting it out there professionally.
hey mikechen, google docs is ok but not best for screenwriting. formatting gets tricky and you might miss cool features. have you tried celtx? go for the contest too, its good experience even if you dont win. all the best with your script!
