Concern over Notion's access restrictions for Russian users

Hey everyone,

I’m feeling pretty bummed out right now. Just found out that Notion is going to shut down access for Russian users next month. As a student here trying to get into a US college, this is a big setback.

I’ve been using the free version of Notion for a while now. They stopped letting Russians pay for it ages ago because of sanctions. But now they’re cutting off the free service too.

What’s weird is that other apps like Todoist and GitHub aren’t doing this. Notion says it’s because of new US rules, but those rules actually say free cloud services should still be okay for Russian users.

Anyone else dealing with this? It just feels unfair to lose access to my notes and work because of where I happened to be born. Any suggestions for good Notion alternatives that won’t geo-block?

man, that sucks big time. notion’s move seems kinda harsh. have u looked into evernote? i switched to it a while back and its pretty solid. or maybe try onenote, its free and syncs across devices. hope u find smthing that works for u soon!

As someone who’s been through a similar situation, I totally get your frustration. It’s maddening when politics interfere with our productivity tools. I’ve found Notion alternatives like Coda or Anytype to be solid options that don’t geo-restrict. They offer similar functionality and might even have some features Notion lacks.

One thing I’d strongly recommend is exporting all your Notion data ASAP. You don’t want to lose access to your hard work. Consider using a VPN as a temporary workaround, though that’s not a long-term solution.

It’s a tough situation, but try to see it as an opportunity to explore new tools that might serve you even better in the long run. Good luck with your college applications!

I understand your frustration with this situation. It’s unfortunate that Notion is taking such a broad approach to compliance. As someone who has switched note-taking systems before, I can relate to the disruption this change has caused. Have you considered alternatives like Obsidian or Joplin? Both offer robust features and emphasize local storage, which might help avoid geo-restrictions. Additionally, exporting your data now could prevent future data loss. Exploring self-hosted solutions may also be a viable route if you’re comfortable with more technical setups.
