Configuring Gmail as a Smarthost for Debian Exim4

I need assistance setting up Exim4 on my Debian system so that it routes outgoing emails through Gmail rather than my ISP. This configuration requires establishing TLS security and providing a valid Gmail username and password. The default smarthost template that comes with Exim4 on Debian does not include these necessary elements.

I have been experimenting with routing emails through Gmail on my Debian system, and I found that a careful revision of the file /etc/exim4/passwd.client was necessary. I edited this file to include the proper Gmail credentials and then used dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config to set the smarthost with the proper TLS settings. The key point is to enter all the required parameters correctly and then restart the service to apply changes. My experience showed that any minor misconfiguration could prevent proper TLS negotiation, so attention to detail is essential.
