Coordinating multiple AI agents on a complex workflow—does it actually work or does management overhead kill the gains?

I’ve been reading about autonomous AI teams—the idea of spinning up multiple agents that specialize in different tasks and having them work together on a complex workflow. Like, one agent handles data validation, another does enrichment, another handles routing decisions. In theory, this is elegant: each agent owns its domain, and you avoid having one monolithic AI make all decisions.

But here’s my concern: doesn’t coordinating multiple agents introduce its own overhead? Someone has to manage handoffs, ensure data is formatted correctly between agents, handle cases where one agent disagrees with another, deal with timing issues if one agent finishes before another.

I’m thinking specifically about a complex customer data processing workflow. I could either:

  1. Use one big AI model to do validation, enrichment, and routing in a single batch
  2. Set up three specialized agents—validator, enricher, router—and have them work in sequence

Option 1 is simpler. Option 2 is theoretically more maintainable and scalable, but the coordination logistics might be nightmarish.

Has anyone actually built something with multiple AI agents? Does the specialization benefit actually outweigh the coordination complexity, or is it a trap?
