Hey everyone! I’m trying to figure out how to make a contents table in my Google Docs document that includes page numbers. I know how to use the built-in table of contents feature, but it doesn’t show the page numbers for each section. Is there a way to add this information? I’ve looked through the settings and can’t seem to find an option for it. Has anyone here managed to do this before? Any tips or tricks would be really helpful. I’m working on a long document and having page numbers in the contents would make navigation so much easier. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer!
hey there! i’ve got a trick for ya. use the addon ‘table of contents with page numbers’ from google workspace marketplace. it’s pretty easy to set up n gives u exactly what ur lookin for. just install, refresh, and bam! u got ur paginated contents table. hope this helps!
I’ve found a method that combines automation with manual adjustment. Begin by inserting the built-in table of contents so that your headings update automatically. Then convert this table into a regular table and add an extra column for the page numbers. You will need to enter these numbers by hand. Although this approach requires periodic updates—especially after significant changes—it allows you to retain the flexibility of an automatically updated heading list while also displaying page numbers, making navigation through lengthy documents much easier.
I’ve faced this exact issue before, and there’s a workaround that might help you out. While Google Docs doesn’t have a built-in feature for page numbers in the table of contents, you can create a manual version that works well.
Here’s what I do: I make my document first, then manually create a table at the beginning. I list all my headings in one column, then in the second column, I add the corresponding page numbers. It takes a bit more time, but it gives you full control over the layout and information included.
One tip: I usually wait until I’m nearly finished with the document before adding page numbers, as they can shift if you make significant edits. Also, remember to update your manual table if you make changes that affect pagination. It’s not automatic like the built-in TOC, but it gets the job done when you need those page numbers visible.
