Creating indented text within numbered lists in Google Docs without making new list items

I’m trying to format a document in Google Docs where I need to add some indented content under certain numbered list items, but I don’t want this indented text to become part of the numbering sequence.

1. First point
   Additional details here (not numbered)
2. Second point
3. Third point

More information with spacing above and below

4. Fourth point (continuing original numbering)

I want to achieve the indented sections shown above - both the inline indented text and the spaced indented content. What’s the best way to format this properly in Google Docs so the numbering stays correct?

yup, using tab works! just make sure to use shift+enter for line breaks. that keeps everything in line without messing the numbrs up.

Had this same issue with project docs. Finish typing your numbered item, hit Enter, then Ctrl+Shift+8 to turn off list formatting. Now you can add indented content without messing up the numbering. When you’re done, hit Enter again and Ctrl+Shift+8 to turn the list back on - it’ll pick up right where you left off. If you need extra spacing, just add more line breaks before turning the numbering back on. This approach is more effective than using tabs.

Here’s what works for me: put your cursor at the end of the numbered item, hit Enter, then Shift+Tab to break out of the numbering. You’ll get a new line that stays indented but isn’t numbered anymore. Type whatever you need, then hit Enter twice when you want the next number - Google Docs picks up the numbering automatically. If you want extra spacing like you mentioned, just add another Enter before typing. I’ve used this method tons of times and it keeps the formatting clean whether you’re sharing or printing.
