I’ve been a Google Calendar user for many years to manage important cultural celebrations and religious occasions. Lately, I’ve noticed that a number of key cultural events that were once visible on my calendar have simply disappeared. These were not events I input myself; they came from Google’s default holiday calendar that I subscribed to.
This is quite frustrating because I depend on these alerts to plan for family gatherings and cultural observances. Has anyone else faced this issue where cultural holidays suddenly stop appearing? I’ve reviewed my calendar settings several times but can’t determine why this is occurring.
Is there a way to bring back these cultural events, or will I have to add them manually? Any advice would be welcome as this impacts how I organize my schedule around important cultural occasions.
This started happening to me about six months ago and drove me absolutely nuts until I figured it out. Google merged their holiday calendars into regional versions, so depending on your location settings, certain cultural holidays might’ve moved to different feeds. Here’s what worked for me: go to Settings and check your country/region preferences first. Then manually search for specific cultural holiday calendars by name instead of using the general “Holidays” option. I found separate calendars for Hindu holidays, Islamic holidays, etc. that weren’t showing up in the main browse section. Also caught me off guard - Google now requires the correct time zone for certain cultural holidays to display properly. Some lunar calendar events were completely missing until I fixed this setting. Their algorithm filters out holidays it thinks aren’t relevant to your location, which is super frustrating when you’re trying to observe cultural traditions that span multiple regions.
Google’s been screwing with their holiday calendars for months. I see this across multiple orgs at work.
First - check your calendar settings. Hit “Add calendar” then “Browse calendars of interest.” See if your cultural holidays calendar is still checked. Google randomly unchecks these after updates.
Still enabled but missing events? Remove the whole calendar and re-add it. Forces a fresh sync and usually fixes it.
Google also renamed some holiday calendars. “Religious holidays” might be “Cultural events” now. Just search for your specific holidays by name.
If all else fails, import an ICS file with your holidays. Find a reliable source and import as a new calendar. Way better than dealing with Google’s inconsistent data.
This happens because Google keeps switching backend providers for holiday data. Annoying but fixable.
Had this exact issue last year - my team’s cultural holidays kept disappearing from our shared calendar. Google’s holiday calendars are terrible and they randomly change data sources without telling anyone.
I built my own solution that’s way more reliable. Set up automation that pulls cultural holiday data from multiple sources and syncs everything directly to my calendar.
My system checks different holiday databases weekly, cross-references the data, and auto-adds events with custom notifications. Never miss updates or deletions anymore.
Best part? I can pick which holidays actually matter to my family, set different alert times, and sync across multiple calendar apps. No more vanishing holidays or manually adding hundreds of dates.
Calendar automation is perfect for this stuff - runs in the background and keeps everything synced without lifting a finger. Set it once and you’re done.
Ugh, same thing happened to me around Diwali. Google changed how they handle lunar holidays and some just disappeared. Try calendar.google.com on desktop instead of mobile - the missing holidays might show up there. The mobile app hides certain cultural events for some reason. Worked for me after weeks of wondering why my family’s celebrations weren’t showing up anymore.
