Customizing and preserving a specific order in Notion

Hey everyone! I’m using Notion for my recipe collection and I’ve got a question. I’ve arranged my recipes in a particular order by dragging and dropping them. Now I want to save this layout as a preset view. Is there a way to do this without adding extra properties?

I know I could add a number property to each recipe, but I’d rather not clutter things up if possible. I’ve looked online but couldn’t find a clear answer. It seems like I can have the recipes in a custom order, but I’m not sure how to save it as a view I can switch to easily.

Does anyone know if there’s a built-in way to save a custom order in Notion? Or maybe a workaround that doesn’t involve adding unnecessary properties? Thanks for any help!

In my experience, Notion does not provide a built-in method to save a custom manual order as a preset view without the use of additional properties. The drag-and-drop arrangement you create is only temporary and resets when switching views or sorting by other criteria.

A workaround I have found is to introduce a hidden ‘Display Order’ property, which you can use to reapply your preferred order when needed. Although not ideal, it is the most efficient solution available at the moment. Hopefully, future updates will offer a more streamlined approach.

I’ve been using Notion for recipe management too, and I completely understand your desire for a clean, uncluttered layout. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way to save a custom order without using an additional property. It’s one of Notion’s limitations that can be frustrating for users who want more flexibility in organizing their content.

One trick I’ve used is to create a ‘Sort’ property and hide it from view. I assign numbers to recipes in increments of 10 (10, 20, 30, etc.), which allows me to easily insert new recipes between existing ones without renumbering everything. It’s not perfect, but it gives me the control I want without visually cluttering my database.

Another option is to use the ‘Favorite’ feature. You can star your most important recipes, which will keep them at the top of your list. It’s not a full custom order solution, but it might help for your most-used recipes.

Hopefully, Notion will add better custom ordering features in the future. For now, these workarounds might help you maintain some control over your recipe layout.

hey sofia, i feel ur pain! notion can be tricky sometimes. have u tried using tags? u could create a tag for each recipe’s position (like ‘first’, ‘second’, etc) and then sort by that. it’s not perfect, but it might work without adding too much clutter. good luck with ur recipes!
