Customizing and preserving recipe order in Notion

Hey everyone! I’ve been using Notion for my recipe collection and I’m loving it. But I’m stuck on something. I’ve got my recipes in a specific order that I like, but I can’t figure out how to save it as a preset view. I know I could add a number property, but I’d rather not clutter things up if I don’t have to. Has anyone found a way to keep a custom order without extra properties? I’ve looked online but couldn’t find anything helpful. It’d be great if I could switch between different saved orders too. Any tips would be awesome!

I’ve been in the same boat with my recipe collection in Notion. After some trial and error, I found a workaround that might help. Instead of adding a number property, I created a ‘tag’ property and used it to group my recipes. This way, I can create different views based on tags like ‘favorites’, ‘quick meals’, or ‘seasonal’. It’s not a perfect solution for custom ordering, but it allows me to organize recipes in various ways without cluttering the main view.

Another trick I use is to create separate databases for different recipe categories. This gives me more control over the order within each category. It takes a bit more setup initially, but it’s been worth it for keeping things organized long-term.

Notion’s lack of a straightforward custom ordering feature can be frustrating, but with some creative thinking, you can usually find a way to make it work for your needs. Hope this helps!

hey livbrown, i feel ur pain! ive been messing with notion recipes too. one trick i found is using emojis in the recipe names. like :apple: for favs or :fire: for spicy stuff. then u can sort by name and get a custom order without extra properties. its not perfect but works ok for me. hope that helps!

I’ve encountered this issue as well with my Notion recipe database. While there’s no built-in solution for custom ordering without additional properties, I’ve found a workaround that might suit your needs. Create a ‘Sort Order’ property and use decimal numbers (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, etc.) instead of whole numbers. This allows you to insert new recipes between existing ones without renumbering everything. You can hide this property in your main view to keep things uncluttered.

For switching between different orders, I recommend creating multiple views with different sort criteria. For example, one view sorted by ‘Sort Order’, another by date added, and another by cuisine type. This approach gives you flexibility without compromising your preferred default order.
