I’ve made the choice to cancel my Spotify subscription after being a loyal user for several years. I really liked the app’s design and interface. I stuck with Spotify even when they hiked their prices from 129 PHP, thinking that I would reconsider if they increased the prices again. Now that they have raised the price once more, I’ve opted for YouTube Premium instead. While I miss some features that Spotify has and YouTube Music lacks, I find it acceptable since YouTube Premium offers both music streaming and ad-free YouTube. The price difference is just 20 pesos, making the transition more reasonable. I’m eagerly awaiting an official desktop app for YouTube Music, as that’s something I’m still hoping for.
Same thing happened to me six months back when Spotify jacked up their prices again. What convinced me was that I’m already on YouTube constantly - music videos, podcasts, random videos. Why pay for two things when one covers everything? YouTube Music’s recommendations were weird at first compared to Spotify, but it figured out what I like eventually. Pretty cool how it suggests music based on videos you’ve watched too. Only real downside is no desktop app - the web player crashes on me during long work sessions.
yeah, prices are getting insane everywhere. I switched to youtube premium since I was already paying for youtube anyway lol. really miss spotify’s discover weekly tho - that thing was amazing for finding new music.
Smart move switching over. I did the same thing last year when streaming services kept jacking up prices.
But here’s what I did instead of dealing with each platform’s BS - I set up automation that syncs playlists between services. Add songs to one platform, it automatically creates the same playlist everywhere else. Now I can jump between services based on pricing or bail when they get greedy.
It also tracks my listening habits and backs up playlist data. So when YouTube Music pulls the same pricing crap as Spotify, I can switch to Apple Music without losing years of playlists I’ve built.
I use Latenode since it connects to basically every music API. Takes 30 minutes to set up and you’re not stuck with one service anymore. Fixes that desktop app issue you mentioned too - everything runs from one dashboard.
Best part? Never manually recreating playlists when switching. Runs in the background and keeps everything synced.
totally feel you on that! with all the price hikes, it’s hard to justify staying with spotify. I made the switch to yt premium too, and honestly, it feels pretty good. music on top of no ads on yt is a win for me!
I made the same switch about eight months ago, though I was chasing better value rather than escaping price hikes. The YouTube integration turned out way more useful than expected - finding live performances and music videos for songs I discover is actually pretty sweet. Took the algorithm about three weeks to figure out my taste, but it’s surprisingly spot-on now. Pro tip: use their playlist transfer tool from Spotify. It’s not perfect and you’ll have to fix some mismatched songs manually, but it saves tons of time. No desktop app sucks, but I just keep a browser tab pinned. Bottom line: the bundle value makes it worth it, even though the music app isn’t quite as polished as Spotify.
Had this same struggle recently. What made me switch wasn’t just Spotify’s price hikes - they kept cutting features while asking for more money. YouTube Premium caught me off guard in a good way. The music app felt weird at first, but now I love how you can jump from a song to its music video to live performances without switching apps. No desktop client sucks though, and the web player gets laggy during long sessions. Still better value when you get YouTube thrown in.
