Email to WordPress Post Publishing Methods

I run a website that gets updated frequently and I need a way to create posts when I’m traveling. I want to write content on my mobile device, review it, and send it somewhere that will automatically create a new post on my WordPress site.

I’ve been thinking about a few different approaches:

  1. Work offline and sync everything when I get back home (not ideal for me)
  2. Use email to create posts directly from my phone
  3. Email myself text content and copy it into WordPress manually later

I don’t need every possible option listed out. I’m looking for the single best method that actually works well in practice. If you’ve used something successfully, please share your experience.

I’m running WordPress 2.6 currently.

Update: I found out WordPress has a built-in feature for this, but I need my posts to go into Draft status first. I want to add images and do additional editing later, but having the main content already there would save me tons of time.

I discovered there are many software options available, but I just want to know which one works best in real-world use.

I’ve used WordPress’s email posting for two years - it’s perfect for this. Takes 10 minutes to set up: create a dedicated email through your host, plug it into WordPress settings, done. Email that address and WordPress auto-creates a draft with your content. Subject line = title, email body = content. Since everything lands in drafts, you can add images and clean things up later at your computer. I write 60% of my posts this way during my commute. Only issue is HTML formatting sometimes gets wonky in emails, but plain text works great. WordPress 2.6 has this built-in, so you won’t need any plugins.

Been doing this since WP 2.5 - the built-in email posting works great once you set it up right. Pro tip: use a separate email just for posting. Don’t mix it with your regular email or you’ll flood your drafts folder (learned that one the hard way lol). Typing emails on mobile beats wrestling with WP admin on a tiny screen any day.

Email-to-post works great for mobile content creation. I’ve been using it for three years and it’s a lifesaver when I’m traveling for work. Watch out for your email client auto-formatting text with weird spacing or line breaks - WordPress keeps all that formatting in the draft. Found this out the hard way when my paragraphs got split across random lines. Test different email apps on your phone since some handle plain text way better than others. Gmail’s mobile app has been the most reliable for me. The draft feature is perfect - you get that safety net to clean everything up before hitting publish. Just use a strong password for that posting email since anyone who gets access can create posts on your site.
