Exciting updates coming to Plex: New features and improvements on the horizon

Hey Plex users! I just heard some awesome news about upcoming changes to our favorite media server. Looks like we’re getting a bunch of cool new stuff soon:

  1. They’re opening up the Plex API. This could mean more third-party apps and integrations.

  2. NFO file support is coming. Great for those of us who like to keep our metadata organized.

  3. Custom agents are on the way. Maybe we can finally fix those annoying mismatches?

  4. Separate apps for Photos and Music. No more digging through menus to find what we want!

  5. A brand new server management experience. Fingers crossed it makes things easier to set up and maintain.

What do you all think about these changes? Anyone particularly excited about any of these features? I’m personally stoked about the custom agents. How about you?

As a long-time Plex user, I’m cautiously optimistic about these updates. The API opening could be a game-changer, potentially allowing for more robust home automation integrations. I’m particularly intrigued by the separate apps for Photos and Music. While it might streamline the interface, I hope it doesn’t fragment the user experience too much. The new server management tools sound promising, but I’ve been burned before by ‘improvements’ that actually made things more complicated. I’ll reserve judgment until I can test it out. Custom agents could be great for niche content, but I worry about potential inconsistencies across different setups. Overall, it seems like Plex is moving in an interesting direction, but as with any major changes, the devil will be in the details of implementation.

I’ve been using Plex for years, and these updates sound promising. The custom agents feature really catches my eye. I’ve had countless issues with incorrect metadata, especially for foreign films and niche TV series. Being able to create our own agents could finally solve this headache.

The separate apps for Photos and Music are intriguing too. I’ve always felt the current setup was a bit clunky when trying to manage different media types. Hopefully, this change will make navigation more intuitive.

One thing I’m slightly concerned about is the new server management experience. While improvements are welcome, I hope they don’t oversimplify things to the point where we lose some of the advanced options power users rely on.

Overall, it seems Plex is heading in the right direction. These updates could potentially address some long-standing issues in the community. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’re implemented in practice.
