I messed up big time. Tried to join a crypto group on Telegram and got tricked by a fake authentication bot. It made me run a command on my computer. I know, I know, pretty dumb move.
I’m new to Telegram and freaked out. Deleted the app, my account, and the file that ran on my PC. Went offline ASAP and started a virus scan.
Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I do next? I still have the code I entered if that helps.
The crypto was called Xtrachain. Stay away from it!
Really worried about what might happen to my computer now. Any advice would be great. Thanks!
Sorry to hear about your experience, Tom. I’ve seen similar scams targeting crypto enthusiasts lately. First, don’t beat yourself up - these scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated. Here’s what I’d recommend:
Change all your passwords immediately, especially for any financial or crypto-related accounts. Run a full malware scan with reputable antivirus software. Consider doing a clean install of your operating system if you want to be extra cautious.
Moving forward, be extremely wary of any ‘authentication’ requests in Telegram groups, especially if they ask you to run commands. Legitimate groups rarely require this. Always double-check the official channels of any crypto project before joining groups.
Stay safe out there, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need more advice on securing your accounts.
dude that sucks, i got hit by something similar last month. make sure u change ALL ur passwords asap, especially anything crypto related. might wanna factory reset ur pc too just to be safe. those scammers are getting sneaky af. stay vigilant out there bro!
I’ve unfortunately been in a similar situation before, and it’s certainly nerve-wracking. Here’s what I’d recommend based on my experience:
First, kudos for acting quickly by going offline and running a virus scan. That’s a smart first step. Next, I’d suggest doing a full system restore to a point before you ran that command. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it gives you the best chance of removing any malware that might have slipped through.
After that, change all your passwords, especially for anything finance-related. Use a password manager if you’re not already - it’s been a lifesaver for me.
One thing I learned the hard way: always verify groups and bots through official channels before interacting. Scammers are getting incredibly sophisticated these days.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. These scams catch even tech-savvy folks sometimes. Stay vigilant, and remember - if something seems too good to be true in the crypto world, it usually is.
