Figma designs suddenly showing only black borders instead of colors

I’m really frustrated right now and need some help with Figma. I was working on my project and somehow pressed some keyboard shortcut by mistake. Now all my colorful designs are showing up as just black outlines instead of the normal filled shapes and colors I had before.

I tried using Ctrl+Z to undo but that didn’t fix anything. The outline mode seems to be stuck on and I can’t figure out how to get my colors back. Has anyone else run into this issue? What key combination might have caused this and how do I reverse it?

This is really stressing me out because I have a lot of work done on this project.

Been there with the panic when designs disappear! This outline view thing happens all the time.

The keyboard shortcuts others mentioned will fix it instantly, but here’s something cool I discovered when our design team kept hitting this issue. We’d constantly switch between outline and fill modes during reviews, and it was killing our productivity.

I built an automation that watches our Figma workspace and auto-captures screenshots of designs in both modes whenever we update. Saves them to our project folder with timestamps, so if anyone gets confused about view modes or accidentally changes something, we’ve got visual backups.

Runs through Latenode connecting Figma’s API to our file storage. Also pings the team on Slack when outline mode’s stuck for more than 5 minutes, just in case someone forgets to switch back.

Took about 20 minutes to set up, but now our whole design workflow runs smoother. No more stress about hitting wrong keys.

For your immediate problem though, Ctrl+Y should definitely work like others said.

It sounds like you’ve inadvertently activated the outline mode, which is a common issue in Figma when using keyboard shortcuts. You can simply press Ctrl+Y (or Cmd+Y if you’re using a Mac) to toggle the outline mode off. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, try navigating to the View menu and deselecting the “Outline” option. Your shapes and colors should still be intact; they’re just not visible right now. This has happened to me multiple times, so don’t panic—your designs will return to normal with a quick toggle.

Ugh, same thing happened to me last week! So annoying when you’re working on something important. Try shift+1 or shift+2 to cycle through different view modes - that fixed it for me when ctrl+y didn’t work. Don’t worry, your colors are still there!

I experienced this problem too, and it can definitely be unsettling. It’s likely that you accidentally triggered the outline view feature, which can happen with certain keyboard shortcuts. Try pressing Ctrl+Shift+3 again to toggle it off; that should restore your colors. Additionally, double-check the layer options to ensure everything is visible. I understand how stressful this can be, but rest assured that your work is safe; it’s just in a different view right now.
