Hey everyone! I’m having trouble with Google Docs comments. Sometimes I forget to hit the ‘Comment’ button after typing a comment. This means my comments aren’t saved and I might lose them when I close the doc.
Does anyone know a quick way to find these unsaved comments in a big document? Right now I’m just scrolling through everything, which takes forever in long docs with lots of comments.
I’ve noticed Google gives a ‘Changes you made may not be saved’ warning when closing, but that doesn’t help me find the actual comment.
Any ideas? Maybe a way to save all unsaved comments at once? Thanks for your help!
I’ve encountered this issue as well. Unfortunately, there’s no built-in feature to automatically find or save unsaved comments in Google Docs. A workaround I’ve found effective is to periodically use the ‘See all changes’ option in the Version History. This allows you to review recent edits, including any pending comments. It’s not foolproof, but it’s saved me from losing important feedback several times. Additionally, developing a habit of always hitting ‘Comment’ immediately after typing can help prevent this problem in the long run.
hey sarahj, i feel ur pain! happens to me all the time. i dont know of any quick fix, but heres what i do: use ctrl+f to search for words u remember typing in those unsaved comments. its not perfect but faster than scrolling thru everything. hope that helps!
As someone who works with Google Docs daily, I’ve learned a few tricks to deal with this annoying issue. One method I’ve found helpful is using the ‘Suggesting’ mode instead of ‘Editing’ when adding comments. This way, all your changes and potential comments are tracked automatically. You can switch back to ‘Editing’ mode later and decide which suggestions to keep as comments.
Another tip is to use the ‘Ctrl + Alt + M’ shortcut (or ‘Cmd + Option + M’ on Mac) to quickly insert a comment without reaching for the mouse. This has become second nature to me and drastically reduced my unsaved comments.
Lastly, if you’re working on a shared document, consider asking collaborators to use different highlight colors for unsaved comments. This visual cue can make it easier to spot them during a final review. While not perfect, these strategies have significantly improved my workflow and reduced lost feedback.
