Frustration with Google Docs: Lost Work and Autosave Issues

Hey everyone, I’m really upset right now. I was working on a chapter in Google Docs and suddenly lost a big chunk of my work from last night. The app somehow went back to an older version, and I can’t find any trace of my recent changes. It’s so frustrating because I thought it was supposed to autosave everything.

I’m taking a break to cool off, but I’m seriously considering switching to a different writing tool. Has anyone else had similar problems with Google Docs? Any tips on how to prevent this from happening again?

Update: Good news! I found the right version in my Drive. What a relief! I’m definitely going to start saving backups on my laptop from now on. Lesson learned!

I feel your pain, SoaringEagle. Google Docs has let me down a few times too, and it’s always when you least expect it. After a particularly nasty incident where I lost half a day’s work, I started implementing a few safeguards.

First, I got into the habit of hitting Ctrl+S every few minutes, even though it’s supposed to autosave. It’s become almost like a nervous tic now, but it gives me peace of mind. I also started using the ‘Make a copy’ function at the end of each writing session, naming it with the date. It takes a few extra seconds, but it’s saved my bacon more than once.

Another trick I’ve found useful is working in smaller chunks. Instead of one massive document, I break my work into smaller, more manageable pieces. It seems to reduce the chances of sync issues.

Glad you found your work in the end. The relief must have been immense!

I’ve had similar issues with Google Docs in the past. While it’s generally reliable, it’s not infallible. One workaround I’ve found effective is enabling offline access and regularly syncing your device. This creates local copies that can be a lifesaver if cloud syncing fails. Additionally, I’ve made it a habit to use the ‘Version history’ feature frequently, creating named versions at key points in my writing process. This makes it easier to revert to specific stages if needed. Glad you recovered your work, but your plan to keep local backups is wise. No matter the platform, redundancy is key when it comes to important documents.

omg, that mustve been so stressful! happy u got it back. i use google docs and never had that, but it does make me a bit nervus. might wanna try microsoft word or scrivener for big projects.
