Hey everyone, I’m facing a frustrating problem with the GIF search on Instagram. As a creator of custom GIFs on GIPHY, I usually look for my GIFs in the comments by searching for the keyword “biig.” However, after the recent Instagram update a week or two ago, my GIPHY GIFs have disappeared from the results. Now, all I see are generic GIFs with a white background that appear to be AI-generated by Instagram. I first noticed the issue after updating the app on one phone, and then it happened again when I updated my second phone. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is it just a temporary glitch, or has Instagram changed its GIPHY integration? I’m really hoping for a resolution soon since Instagram is my primary platform for sharing my GIFs.
Yeah, this is hitting tons of creators since the update. Same thing happened to me - Instagram’s search now pushes their own GIFs over GIPHY ones. The integration isn’t broken, just buried. GIPHY stuff is still there, but you have to dig past Instagram’s native options to find it. Sometimes specific or weird keywords help pull up the original GIPHY content, but it’s hit or miss. Since this lines up perfectly with the update you mentioned, it’s probably intentional, not a bug. Instagram’s been pushing their own creation tools hard lately, so this feels like part of that push. Don’t expect them to reverse it - they haven’t said anything official about changing it back.
Same thing’s been happening to me! GIPHY stuff still shows up, but Instagram’s algorithm now pushes their own content first. I’ve had better luck being super specific with searches - use two keywords instead of one, or try the exact title if you remember it. Also check if your GIFs are still tagged properly on GIPHY itself. I found some of mine had indexing issues that popped up around the same time. The search definitely feels different now - like they’re testing a new system that prioritizes Instagram content over third-party stuff.
i feel u! its annoying when ur own creations go missing. i loved using my gifs in comments, now its all junk! lets hope they sort it out quickly!
Same thing happened to us 3 weeks ago during a campaign with custom GIFs.
Instagram definitely changed something. GIPHY content gets buried in results now - sometimes doesn’t show up at all for common keywords.
What worked for us: add numbers or punctuation to search terms. Instead of “biig”, try “biig!” or “biig2024”. Sounds weird but Instagram’s algorithm treats these differently now.
Check your GIPHY analytics dashboard too. Some of our GIFs lost searchability when Instagram changed how they index external content. Had to refresh tags on GIPHY’s side.
This looks permanent. Instagram wants people using their native tools instead of third party stuff. Same pattern we’ve seen before.
Might want to start uploading GIFs directly as video content on Instagram. Pain managing two versions but you won’t be stuck relying on their GIPHY integration.
Hit this same problem when our social team lost their branded GIFs. Instagram’s burying GIPHY stuff to push their own content.
We fixed it with automated monitoring. Built a workflow that tracks when our GIFs appear or vanish from searches, then tweaks our posting strategy automatically.
The system pulls data from GIPHY and Instagram APIs, compares search results, and alerts us when our content gets buried. It suggests better-performing keywords too.
We also automated cross-posting to multiple platforms so we’re not stuck with Instagram’s algorithm changes. Everything runs in the background and saves us hours of manual work.
Latenode made building this dead simple - no coding needed. You could probably automate your GIF monitoring the same way.
