Gmail displays incorrect received date, but .eml file shows accurate timestamp

I’ve run into a weird problem with my Gmail account. The received date for emails is always off. But when I save the email as an .eml file and open it, the date is correct. It’s really confusing.

Does anyone know if there’s a setting in Gmail I can change to fix this? I’ve tried a few things:

  1. Downloaded the email and opened it in my mail app
  2. Logged into Gmail using Chrome on my Mac

Both times, I saw different dates for the same email. In the mail app, it shows the right date. But in Gmail on Chrome, it’s wrong.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any ideas on how to make Gmail show the correct received date? It’s driving me nuts!

This issue could be related to Gmail’s timestamp handling across different time zones. Have you recently traveled or changed your computer’s time settings? Sometimes Gmail struggles to sync properly when there are discrepancies between local and server times. One thing you might try is forcing a sync by signing out of Gmail completely, then signing back in. If that doesn’t work, you could also check your Gmail settings to ensure the correct time zone is selected. As a last resort, consider using Gmail’s ‘Send feedback’ option to report the problem directly to their support team. They might be able to investigate any server-side issues causing this timestamp discrepancy.

hey there, i’ve seen this before. check your gmail time zone and clear browser cache. that sometimes does the trick. if not, try reaching out to gmail support.

I’ve actually dealt with this exact issue before, and it was a real headache. What finally worked for me was checking my account’s language and region settings. Sometimes Gmail gets confused if these don’t match your actual location or device settings.

Go to Gmail settings, look for the ‘Language and region’ section, and make sure everything’s set correctly. Also, double-check that your Google Account’s country is accurate.

If that doesn’t solve it, try accessing Gmail through a different browser or the official Gmail app on your phone. I noticed the problem was only happening in Chrome for me, but Firefox displayed dates correctly.

Lastly, if you’re using any browser extensions or add-ons, try disabling them temporarily. I had a privacy extension that was messing with how Gmail displayed dates. Took me ages to figure that one out!
