I’m so annoyed with Google Docs right now. They took away the Table of Contents option from the Insert menu. I use this all the time for work stuff. Now I have to search for it in the help bar instead. It’s such a pain!
I make lots of big documents and need a Table of Contents so people can find things easily. Google’s own help page still says it’s in the Insert menu, but it’s not there anymore.
Does anyone know why they did this? It feels like they’re just making things harder for no reason. I’m thinking about switching to a different tool because of this.
Has anyone else noticed this change? Do you know any easier ways to add a Table of Contents now? I’d love to hear your thoughts or solutions.
Here’s some example code to show how frustrated I am:
def find_table_of_contents():
search_help_bar('Table of Contents')
click_result()
print('Why is this so complicated now?')
find_table_of_contents()
Thanks for listening to my rant. I hope I’m not the only one bugged by this!
I’ve been dealing with this Table of Contents issue too, and it’s definitely a pain. What’s worked for me is using the outline feature as a workaround. If you click View > Show outline, you’ll get a sidebar that acts similar to a Table of Contents. It automatically updates as you add headers, and you can click on sections to jump around the document. It’s not perfect, but it’s saved me some headaches when working on longer docs. Plus, you can easily hide it when you don’t need it. Might be worth giving it a shot if you haven’t already. I agree Google should bring back the old Insert option though - sometimes these ‘improvements’ just make things more complicated.
hey man, I feel ya. google’s always messin with stuff. have u tried the keyboard shortcut? it’s ctrl+alt+h on windows or cmd+option+h on mac. way faster than searchin. maybe they’re pushin us to use shortcuts more? idk, but it’s worth a shot if ur makin lots of docs.
I understand your frustration with the Table of Contents change. While the keyboard shortcut is helpful, there’s actually another method you might find useful. If you go to the ‘Add-ons’ menu and select ‘Get add-ons’, you can search for ‘Table of Contents’ add-ons. There are several free options available that integrate directly into your Google Docs toolbar, making it even easier to insert and update your Table of Contents. This approach might save you time in the long run, especially if you’re working with multiple large documents regularly. It’s not a perfect solution, but it could streamline your workflow until Google potentially reverts or improves their current setup.
