Google Drive and Dropbox integration now available for ChatGPT users

I just learned that ChatGPT has introduced a new feature allowing it to access files from cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox. This update appears significant, but I’m not entirely clear on how it functions or any possible limitations.

Has anyone experimented with this feature yet? I have a few questions. First, what file types can it read and process? Is it capable of handling documents, spreadsheets, or PDFs, or does it only support specific formats? Additionally, how do you connect ChatGPT with your cloud storage accounts?

I’m also concerned about privacy and security. Does ChatGPT store copies of your files, or does it only access them briefly? Can you control which files or folders it can access?

I’m eager to hear from those who have tried this feature and would appreciate any real-world feedback on its usefulness.

I activated this feature last week primarily for analyzing research papers stored in my Google Drive. The connection process requires granting specific permissions through your Google account settings, and you can revoke access anytime which is reassuring. What impressed me most was its ability to extract and summarize content from multi-page PDFs without losing context between sections. However, I encountered issues with password-protected files and some older document formats that wouldn’t process correctly. The integration works best with standard formats like DOCX, XLSX, and PDF files under 25MB. Security-wise, ChatGPT appears to access files on-demand rather than downloading everything, though I still created a separate folder with only non-confidential documents for testing purposes. The feature significantly streamlines document analysis workflows, especially when dealing with multiple files simultaneously. One unexpected benefit was being able to cross-reference information between different documents in my Drive during the same conversation session.

Been using this integration for about two weeks now and it’s pretty solid overall. The setup process is straightforward - you authenticate through OAuth in the settings menu, similar to how you’d connect any third-party app to your Google or Dropbox account. ChatGPT can handle most common file formats including Word docs, Excel sheets, PDFs, and plain text files. I’ve had mixed results with more complex spreadsheets that have heavy formatting or macros though. From what I can tell, it processes files temporarily without creating permanent copies on OpenAI’s servers, but you should still review their privacy policy if you’re working with sensitive data. The permission system lets you grant access at the account level, so be mindful of what’s in your cloud storage before connecting. One limitation I’ve noticed is file size restrictions - very large documents sometimes fail to process completely. For routine document analysis and basic data extraction tasks, it’s been quite useful and saves time compared to manually copying content.

honestly wasnt expecting much but tried it yesterday with some dropbox files and was suprised how smooth it went. connecting took like 2 minutes through the usual oauth stuff. works great with basic pdfs and word docs but struggled with some image-heavy presentations i had stored. privacy wise seems decent since you can disconnect anytime but i’d still avoid uploading anything too sensitive just to be safe.
