I faced this exact challenge and found a solution that works well for us. We use a hybrid approach where we keep most of the workflow visual in n8n but offload complex transformations to external services.
For complex data processing, we built simple microservices using Express.js that handle specific transformations. These are deployed as serverless functions (we use AWS Lambda but any serverless platform works). Then in n8n, we just use the HTTP Request node to call these services, passing the data as JSON.
The benefits are huge:
- Full access to npm ecosystem in our transformations
- Better performance for heavy processing
- Proper version control for the complex code parts
- Easy debugging using standard tools
The workflow stays visual and easy to understand, with the complex bits neatly packaged away. When non-technical users look at it, they just see “Transform Data” nodes without having to understand the JavaScript.
I’ve worked with this hybrid approach in several organizations and found a few effective strategies. In n8n specifically, I’ve had success by combining the Function node with external services for more complex operations.
For moderate complexity, I use the Function node but break down the transformation into smaller, more manageable steps. Instead of one giant function, I create a series of functions that each perform a specific part of the transformation. This makes debugging easier and keeps the code more maintainable.

For complex data transformations in visual workflow tools, I’ve implemented a pattern I call “transformation as a service” that works extremely well.
The approach has three tiers depending on complexity:

This tiered approach lets us scale the complexity of our solution based on the actual requirements while keeping the main workflow visual and comprehensible.
I use webhook nodes to send data to azure functions for complex transformations. This way the main workflow stays visual but i get full npm access and better processing power for heavy data work.
